Philadelphia, PA (23 MAY, 2012)—At the Medical Design Excellence Awards Presentation Ceremony on Thursday, 23 May, the King Vision video laryngoscope was announced as the Gold Winner in the Critical-Care and Emergency Medicine Products category.

Taking the top award in the category is a great honor for King Systems. Steve Davis, King Systems’ CEO, commented on the achievement, “We are very excited to receive this award. With help from clinicians, our entire company has put in a tremendous effort to design, develop and bring this product to market. Everyone involved is proud that King Systems is continuing to provide best-in-class products to medical professionals around the world.”

Using the latest cell phone camera and digital display technology, the King Vision video laryngoscope was developed to simulate the convenience and portability of traditional laryngoscopes at a fraction of the cost of available video laryngoscopes. The intent is to encourage use of this life-saving technology wherever tracheal intubation is needed, both inside and outside the hospital. King Vision is a lightweight, cost-effective video laryngoscope with a clinician-friendly design, disposable channeled and non-channeled blades and reusable OLED video display. It is truly the industry-first portable, affordable and durable video laryngoscope designed for difficult and routine intubations.

The MDEA (www.MDEAwards.com) is the medical device industry’s premier design awards competition and is the only awards program that exclusively recognizes contributions and advances in the design of medical products. Entries are evaluated on the basis of their design and engineering features, including innovative use of materials, user-related functions that improve healthcare delivery and change traditional medical attitudes or practices, features that provide enhanced benefits to the patient, and the ability of the product development team to overcome design and engineering challenges so that the product meets its clinical objectives.

The King Vision digital laryngoscope has been nominated as a finalist in the critical-care and emergency medicine products category of the 2012 Medical Design Excellence Awards (MDEA) competition. This is in recognition of the design and engineering expertise utilized in the device.

The King Vision digital laryngoscope has been recognized as being innovative in the field of critical care and emergency medicine. It is the first lightweight, cost-effective video laryngoscope available to clinicians and emergency care personnel and provides an affordable solution to a long-standing problem for anaesthetists trying to visualize a patient’s airway during the intubation process. It is a durable and portable visualization system, incorporating a camera in the tip of the disposable device and an attached reusable video display, which allows the doctor a clear view of the vocal cords without manipulating and potentially damaging soft tissue, easing the process and simplifying the intubation procedure.

The King Vision has been developed by King Systems, a Consort Medical company. King Systems launched the King Vision in June 2011 and feedback from clinicians has been very positive. The King Vision is approved for sale in over 60 countries and the list of countries that have imported the product is growing rapidly.

The MDEA is a premier awards program for the medical technology community. The program aims to recognize the achievements of medical product manufacturers and the people responsible for their design.

The winner of the award category will be announced on May 23rd 2012.

Gregg D’Antonio is a King Systems Sales Representative whose territory includes Pennsylvania, and who has recently had an amazing experience sharing the King Vision with paramedics in Haverford, Pennsylvania. Lately, the King Vision has been creating a buzz of excitement with health care professionals all over the world. One individual in particular has experienced great success with King Systems’ newest innovation. Gregg tells his story below:

I recently received a phone call from the Haverford, PA Chief of Paramedics, a gentleman named Jim McCans. Jim informed me that he had seen the King Vision™ at a workshop that one of my customers held and he was interested in me showing it to his whole crew, as he wanted one on every truck. He also informed me that he had a special challenge for me: a young man named Chase Frost.

Chase Frost was 20 year old fireman in 2007, when he went on a call for a row home fire. While working to put out the fire, the interior of the row home collapsed with Chase under it. Chase survived, but unfortunately lost an arm and leg in the collapse. He went through a difficult four years of surgeries and rehabilitation to be where he is today.

As soon as Chase was physically able, he started taking paramedic classes. In order to pass his paramedic classes, Chase has to be able to intubate a patient. However, due to his prostetic, he cannot use a metal laryngoscope to intubate. Determined, Chase continued to try to figure out a way to intubate using a conventional laryngoscope.

At one point, Chief McCans saw him practicing intubation in the fire house so intensely that he was sweating with frustration. Chief McCans, as an Iraq veteran with a soft spot for amputees, took Chase under his wing. Chief McCans has spent the last few months trying every intubation system on the market, but Chase couldn’t grip any of them properly. He even went as far as to have a machinist build him a makeshift prosthetic to help him hold a few of them.

So, on the day of the appointment at the Haverford, PA fire house, I got to meet Chase. I introduced him to the King Vision and showed him how quickly and easily it can be used to intubate. After the demonstration, I handed the device over to him.

He intubated on the first try.

If you could have seen his face when he was able to intubate with his prosthetic, you would have gotten the chills like I did. He had the whole crew cheering for him because they know how hard he has worked to get to where he is today.
